We've made it! The end is near! I'm so proud of the progress we have made this year. We will soon find out the passing percentage on the reading TAKS -- I feel confident we will all be taking a trip to Prime Time pretty soon! Thank you to all the students who have been coming to after-school tutoring! I know this hard work will pay off on April 30th.
For the last six weeks, we will be reading Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli. This a funny and fast-paced novel that I think the kids will really enjoy. We will continue to have vocabulary tests every week, so be looking for the words on Mondays. To celebrate the end of TAKS, we will no longer have homework pages during the week.

This year, the fifth-graders in my reading class will be reading several QUALITY novels. We will start with Trapped in Death Cave and then move on to Number the Stars, and finally Maniac Magee. With each novel, we will be practicing strategies that will help them with the TAKS test in March and April.
I am excited about introducing these fifth-graders to some wonderful books this year!

All students now know their AR reading level as well as their points goal for each six weeks. We go to the library EVERY Wednesday, so they must have their book with them at all times!
Each student will receive 2 grades each six weeks concerning AR. One grade will be the average grade of their AR quizzes for the six weeks, and the other grade concerns whether or not the student met his/her points goal. Due to the 45-minute classes, the students will not have much time to read during class time. Please encourage your child to read at home for at least thirty minutes per day.
This year, we will be offering some very exciting prizes for students who meet their goals each six weeks. Check back for more information regarding these great reward opportunities for your child!

Last year was my first year to teach at South Elementary, and I am so thrilled to start another year! I went through the Breckenridge school system from kindergarten to graduation (2002), so I can't believe I am actually teaching in the same school I attended not too long ago! I graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in May of 2006 with a Bachelor of Behavioral Science degree, and I am certified to teach English/Reading/Language Arts for the 4-8 grades. My husband (Vince Moore) and I live in town, and we are both enjoying teaching in BISD. Reading is a passion for me, and I love this age group. I learned so much last year, and I am truly looking forward to yet another wonderful learning/teaching opportunity!
