Hello! Welcome to Reading Recovery at East Elementary. My name is Alicia Waller, and I am one of the teachers in the Reading Recovery classroom. I have taught in First Grade for thirteen years and in Reading Recovery for nine years.

Reading Recovery is a program developed only for First Grade students that are having difficulty learning to read. This is a one-on-one short-term intervention program designed to help the child be able to read as well as the average reader in the classroom after twenty weeks. In the mornings, I teach four students individually for thirty minutes each.

During the afternoons, I teach Literacy Groups. I teach two groups of four students each. In the afternoon Literacy Groups, I focus on teaching the struggling readers to gain confidence and skills. These groups work on reading and writing. They learn a new poem almost every week. They learn how to write stories, and they read several new books each week. They play word wall games and other games to help them learn their high frequency words. The goal for each child is to become an independent reader and writer.
