My name is Linda Harris. I teach at East Elementary in
Breckenridge, Texas. I teach Reading Recovery and Literacy
Groups to first graders. Reading Recovery is a one-on-one
reading intervention program for first grade students only.
Literacy Groups consist of 4 students and we spend 45 minutes
working on reading and writing skills.

This is my 25th year to teach school. I taught 3rd grade for 7
years at West Rusk ISD. When we moved to Breckenridge, I taught
1st grade for 3 years. Then I spent the next 10 years at
home raising my own children. I have been back to teaching
for 15 years, 13 of which have been in Reading Recovery. My
day is filled with teaching young children to read. It is a
day full of challenges, but also many rewards. I really love
what I do.

Reading Recovery is a short term one-on-one intervention program for first graders. Each child meets with a Reading Recovery teacher for 30 minutes daily for 12-20 weeks. Lesson plans are designed specifically for the individual child’s strengths and weaknesses. Each lesson consists of reading familiar books, reading a book on their own for a running record, word work, writing, and reading a new book. The goal is for each child to develop a self extending system and be able to perform with the average in the classroom.

Literacy Groups consist of 4 children working with a Literacy Group teacher for 45 minutes each day. We work on using strategic activity in reading, learning how words work, and writing words and stories. We also do work stations, learn poems, and play word wall games.
